Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru among 18 arrested at Ruai bar

Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru Mwangi is among 34 people arrested on Saturday for disregarding the social distancing directive.

The MP was arrested at Ruai Gardens- an entertainment joint along the Eastern Bypass alongside 18 others.

Nairobi Regional Commander Phillip Ndolo told Citizen TV that police officers have intensified crackdown in a move aimed at averting the spread of the new coronavirus.

Elsewhere, 17 residents of the Nyayo Estate were arrested earlier on Saturday at a birthday party within the Estate.

The 17 were attending a party at the house of one of the officials of the estate with the neighbours saying the party had gone on for several days.

The lot will now be forced into a 14-day quarantine after which they will be tested for the novel coronavirus.

Photos shared across social media platform also showed Kenyans trooping into at a joint in Kitengela, flouting the directive that forbade gatherings.

On Friday, a magistrate and a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Colonel were among 30 people arrested at an unbridled party in Embakasi on Friday evening.

Officers acting on a tip-off from a member of the public raided the bar and arrested the revellers who had defied the government’s directives on social distancing.

The party-goers will be spending the Easter weekend in the slammer until Tuesday when they will be arraigned in court.

The Ministry of Health previously appealed to Kenyans to cease attending all forms of gatherings to avert the spread of the novel coronavirus,

On Monday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said police officers were pursuing four Kenyans who had hailed an ambulance to transport them to a party after the government imposed a Nairobi metropolitan area lockdown.

Kenya has so far recorded 191 cases of the coronavirus with the numbers set to rise once the government begins testing at the community level.
