Elected governors swearing in to kick off Thursday

Devolution Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri, says that the swearing in ceremonies of the governors-elect, who won in the just concluded election, will begin on Thursday, August 17 adding that outgoing governors will receive send off packages as stipulated by the law.

Speaking at the Treasury offices Tuesday, Kiunjuri said that the national government has made the necessary arrangements to ensure a smooth transition of power under the devolved system of Government.

“The national government will facilitate and ensure that there is a smooth transition process, the Judges and Magistrates in the counties are ready to swear in the governors-elect and the transition committee is set to preside over the process,” Kiunjuri said.

The first Governor to be sworn in will be Machakos Governor-elect, Dr. Alfred Mutua, on August 17 and the last one will be sworn in August 22.

Kiunjuri said that the swearing in ceremony of Mombasa governor-elect will be held on August 27, Kwale August 21, Kilifi August 21, Tana River August 21 and Embu August 18.

The CS, however, said that governors facing corruption allegations will be recalled by parliamentary committees to answer questions related to accountability during their time in office.

“Governors accused of abetting corruption will still be held accountable and those who had mortgages will still pay,” he said.
