Eight of 14 Nanyuki GK prison escapees recaptured

Police in Laikipia County are investigating an incident in which 14 capital offender prisoners escaped from lawful custody.

According to a police report filed at the Nanyuki Police Station; at around 02.52 a.m. on Saturday, police officers on patrol in the Likii area responded to gunshots at the Nanyuki GK Prison.

“Officers from station,DCI and CIPU were mobilised and immediately rushed to the scene map ref 853583 about  3km west of the station,” The police report reads  “They established that 14 prisoners charged with capital offences had escaped  from the said prison,” 

The security team then launched a manhunt, which resulted in the arrest of eight prison escapee; six others are said to have escaped and are still at large.

They include Mareri Tetkor who hails from Rumuruti, Nangoye Lenawaso and Lereiyo Lekiare from Samburu,  who have been convicted of murder. 

Others include: Francis Nduati and Patrick Fundi from Laikipia and James Sike from Turkana who are serving time for robbery with violence. 

According to police officers, the prisoners managed to cut through the doors using a hacksaw before jumping over the perimeter wall.
