DP Ruto: I'm ready to have tea with Raila after the elections

DP William Ruto speaks during the last Kenya Kwanza campaign rally at the Nyayo stadium on August 6, 2022.

  • DP Ruto highlighted that he is willing to even “have tea” with the former premier once the August 9 polls are done and dusted.
  • The DP reiterated that he and Odinga are only political rivals who are both gunning to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House.

Deputy President William Ruto has once again reiterated that there is no bad blood between himself and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga despite their perceived political differences.

The DP highlighted that he is willing to even “have tea” with the former premier once the August 9 polls are done and dusted.

Speaking at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, when Kenya Kwanza presented its final submissions to voters ahead of the polls, DP Ruto reiterated that he and Odinga are only political rivals who are both gunning to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House.

Having differing political views, he went on, should not be mistaken for enmity since democracy isn't war and it requires a high level of respect between opposing factions.

"Nimemwambia rafiki yangu Raila ya kwamba mimi niko tayari kukunywa na yeye chai baada ya Tuesday. Chai tutakunywa my friend, kwa sababu sisi ni Wakenya na kwa sababu sisi ni mandugu," he said.

DP Ruto however stated that should he occupy State House after the polls, his administration would not allow the leader of the opposition party to get actively involved in government affairs; a cheeky statement referencing the March 2018 handshake between President Kenyatta and Odinga.

"Lakini mambo ambayo sitafanya ni yale yalifanyika miaka mitano iliyopita, mambo ya kuchanganya upinzani na serikali na kutengeneza kitu ambayo Wakenya hawaijui ya kuhujumu katiba ya Kenya, hiyo mimi sitafanya," he said.

The DP likewise proceeded to fire shots at some of his detractors who ruled him out of the presidential race long before this electioneering period citing that he had made it this far because a higher power wanted him to do so.

"Mimi nasimama mbele yenu nikimshukuru Mungu kwa sababu mimi kufika hapa leo ni kwa sababu ya Mwenyezi Mungu. Walisema hatutakuwa kwa ballot lakini tuko kwa ballot. Si Mungu ni wa ajabu?" Posed the Kenya Kwanza frontman.
