Doctors CBA with counties registered at Labour Court

The Collective Bargaining Agreement signed between doctors union, KMPDU, and the 47 county government following the crippling 100-day pay strike that ended in March has been registered at the Labour Court.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union officials presented the documents before Justice Nzioka Wamakau at Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi.

The CBA was signed by the two sides on  July 6 this year in a process supervised by the Labour Ministry.

The CBA is as a result of a return-to-work formula that KMPDU and the Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu signed on March 14 this year to end the 100-day strike that had paralyzed services in public hospitals countrywide.

The medical strike, the longest-ever in Kenya, prompted the government to threaten to sack the striking medical officers and in turn import 500 foreign doctors from Tanzania in what the Ministry of Health termed as a move to curb the staffing crisis.

However, High Court Judge, Nelson Abuotha, barred the government from importing the foreign doctors until consultations with all stakeholders within the health sector have been held.

Seven KMPDU officials, who were christened The CBA 7, were jailed on February 13 for contempt of court after failing to call off the strike after it had be declared illegal by the court but were later released after 48 hours in jail.

The strike kicked off on December 5 last year and ended on March 14 this year.
