Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu gets 32 lawyers for her defence team

Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu has assembled 32 lawyers to represent her over charges of abuse of office and graft.

The advocates consist of some of Kenya’s top advocates including Senior Counsel John Khaminwa, Senators James Orengo (Siaya), Mutula Kilonzo Junior (Makueni) and Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira).

On Wednesday Kalonzo Musyoka also joined the Defence team saying: “This an attack to the Judiciary.”

According to him, the case requires sufficient time as a recognition of the critical importance of her position.

He added that there is an issue of decorum since the person charged is second in command in the entire judicial system.

Others lawyers in the team are MPs Anthony Oluoch (Mathare) Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay) and Millie Odhiambo (Suba North).

Julie Soweto, Harun Ndubi, Nelson Havi are also in the list of Philomena Mwilu’s defence team.

The Deputy CJ is facing charges of abuse of office, bribery and failure to pay taxes before the Anti-Corruption Court.

Philomena Mwilu was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Milimani Law Courts.

However, due to a technical hitch over gazetted hours for plea taking, the court was adjourned to Wednesday and Mwilu was released on a Ksh.5million bond.
