Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu arrives in court to answer to charges

Embattled Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu has arrived in court to answer to corruption charges related to the Imperial Bank scandal.

She is accompanied by several lawyers including James Orengo, Millie Odhiambo, Mutula Kilonzo Jnr,Peter Kaluma, Dr. John Khaminwa, Okong’o Omogeni, Daniel Maanzo and Anthony Oluoch.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has since released a statement warning the Director of Public Prosecution against allowing his office to be “manipulated by State and non-State actors.”

“In the matter of the DCJ Justice (Philomena) Mwilu, it is difficult not to be concerned about whether the DPP applied his mind to the requirements of Article 157(11) especially in light of Kenya’s recent History.

“It is to be remembered that at the height of the fight for electoral justice the Judiciary came under sharp criticism with the Jubilee side promising to “revisit” what they called “problems” within the Judiciary following the annulment of the Presidential vote by the Supreme Court,” the statement from ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna reads.

Philomena Mwilu was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and taken to the Milimani Law Courts.

However, due to a technical hitch over gazetted hours for plea taking, the court was adjourned to Wednesday morning.

She was released on a Ksh.5million bond after being charged with abuse of office.
