Depression killing marriages? Govt urged to intervene after Mugure family murder

Two legislators have opined that depression is one of the major causes of domestic violence and murder citing the recent case of Major Peter Mugure.

According to Kitui Woman Rep Dr. Irene Kasalu the Mugure case is just one of the many that should have already pushed the government to act.

“Counseling could be a possible solution to help end domestic violence,” she said as she called for State-established counseling departments in all hospitals.

Dr. Kasalu also urged women who are currently in abusive marriages or relationships not to wait till it is too late.

“They should leave the relationship once they see any possible signs of abuse,” she added.

Accordingly, Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna echoed her sentiments saying the counseling centres will enable those suffering from depression and other psychological challenges to seek help.

He further urged those in relationships to treat their partners as equals with respect and dignity..

The lawmaker also said the government must take stern measures to end increasing cases of spousal violence and killings.
