Itumbi released on Ksh.100K cash bail over alleged DP Ruto assassination letter

Dennis Itumbi was on Monday freed by a Nairobi court on a Ksh.100,000 cash bail over the alleged Deputy President William Ruto assassination letter.

Appearing before Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot, Itumbi denied the charges of making and publishing a false document without authority.

The court heard that on June 20, 2019, at an unknown place in Kenya, Itumbi allegedly published to wit a letter dated May 30, 2019 purporting it to be a genuine document made by a cabinet secretary.

He was also charged with reprogramming of a mobile phone contrary to Section 84G of the Kenya Information and Communication Act.

Prosecution requested for stringent conditions against the State House Digital Director, further urging the court to order him not to discuss the case on social media.

The court however freed the accused saying the Ksh.100,000 cash bail deposited when he was previously released on bail still applies.

Itumbi was on July 3 arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at a city restaurant in connection with the alleged assassination letter.

He was arraigned in court the following day where the DCI sought time to record statements from 256 members of a ‘TangaTanga’ WhatsApp group.

He was on July 10 freed after the judge faulted the Prosecution for not availing proof that he would interfere with investigations if set free as they had claimed.
