Daudi Nzomo to serve 12 years in jail for assaulting wife
Daudi Nzomo, the man who was filmed brutally assaulting his wife, has been jailed for 12 years.
Makueni Magistrate James Mwaniki ruled that Nzomo will serve 10 years in prison and the remaining two under probation.
The court was told that this was not his first offense and that previous incidents were settled by the area chief.
“The victim revealed that Nzomo assaulted her back in 2013 when she objected to him marrying a second wife,” the Prosecutor Jennifer Ndeda said.
Ndeda further revealed that Nzomo has been reportedly assaulting both of his wives since then.
According to an uncle, Daudi Nzomo also chased his family from their home in 2016 threatening to beat them up.
The court was further told that early this year, Daudi Nzomo attempted to commit suicide claiming that his first wife Winfred Mwende was cheating on him.
On his part, Nzomo urged his wife Mwende, who is currently in Nairobi, to reconsider her decision to divorce him.
He also urged the magistrate to give him a lenient sentence as he is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Magistrate Mwaniki then gave his ruling and sentenced Nzomo to 12 years in jail.
The Federation of Women Lawyers Kenya (FIDA) has welcomed the ruling.
“It will serve as an example to those who assault their wives,” FIDA Chairperson Joshhine Mong’are said on Wednesday.
