COVID-19: Targeted testing kicks off at Maranda High School

The Ministry of Health has begun targeted testing at Maranda High School after a student tested positive for coronavirus.

According to Siaya County Director of Public Health Kennedy Orwenjo, one positive case was established at the school last weekend.

He told Radio Ramogi that they are currently contact tracing and testing those who may have had contact with the index case.

Mr. Orwenjo reiterated that not all the over 600 Form Four students at Maranda High School will be tested.

He stated that the county still does not have the capacity to test every student who is in session.

The county officer further dismissed claims that a teacher from Maranda High School has been put in isolation.

He explained that targeted testing began on Tuesday and they are still waiting for results of those whose samples were taken.

The student who tested positive is currently in the isolation unit at the Bondo Sub-County Hospital.

Two schools in Mombasa were recently closed following positive cases of COVID-19 at the institutions.

Some teachers and students from Star of the Sea Secondary School and Tononoka High School tested positive for COVID-19 forcing the management to order closure.

On October 26, Tononoka Secondary Principal Mohammed Khamis died following a short illness.

Reports indicate that Mr. Khamis had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Mombasa before he passed on.
