COVID-19: Kenya records 1,008 new cases as 21 patients die

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday said 1,008 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 6,038 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing to 59,595 the number of confirmed infections in the country so far.

From the cases, 972 are Kenyans and 36 are foreigners; 616 are males and 392 females, while the youngest is a two-month old infant and the oldest is 95 years of age.

CS Kagwe, in a statement to the press, also said 802 patients recovered from the disease, 679 of them from the Home-Based Care Program while 123 were discharged from various hospitals, taking recoveries to 39,193.

The country, however, lost 21 patients to the disease bringing the fatality to 1,072.

“There are 1,262 patients currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 5,189 are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 62 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 26 of whom are on ventilatory support and 31 on supplemental oxygen,” read the statement.

“Another 87 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 74 are in the general wards, while 13 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).”

Distribution of the 1,008 cases by counties is as follows; Nairobi 417, Mombasa 87, Kiambu 51, Kajiado 48, Nakuru 35, Kisumu 32, Kakamega 32, Trans Nzoia 26, Kilifi 24, Nyandarua 23, Kericho 23, Uasin Gishu 23, Nyamira 21, Machakos 20, Migori 16, Nyeri 15, Murang’a 14, Turkana 13, Siaya 10, Mandera 9, Busia 8, Meru 7, Kisii 7, West Pokot 6, Tharaka Nithi 6, Makueni 6, Homabay 6, Elgeyo Marakwet 5, Embu 4, Nandi 3, Kirinyaga 2, Bomet 2, Bungoma 2, Samburu 1, Baringo 1,Wajir 1, Kwale 1, and Taita Taveta 1.

The 417 cases in Nairobi are from Lang’ata (46), Kasarani (36), Kamukunji (34), Westlands (33), Mathare (30), Starehe (29), Dagoretti North (27), Embakasi North, Embakasi West and Ruaraka (24) cases each, Makadara (22), Embakasi South (19), Dagoretti South (18), Roysambu (17) Embakasi Central (14), Kibra (13) and Embakasi East (7).

In Mombasa, the 87 cases are from Mvita (39), Jomvu (22), Kisauni (13), Nyali (6), Likoni (4) and Changamwe (3). In Kiambu, the 51 cases are from Ruiru (12), Kikuyu (10), Kiambu Town (7), Juja and Kiambaa (5) cases each, Kabete and Thika (4) cases each, Limuru (2), Gatundu South and Githunguri (1) case each.

In Kajiado, the 48 cases are from Kajiado North (19), Kajiado Central (16), Kajiado East (9) and Lotokitok (4).  In Nakuru, the 35 cases are from Nakuru East (17), Naivasha and Rongai (5) cases each, Nakuru West (4), Njoro (2), Gilgil and Molo (1) case each.

In Kisumu, the 32 cases are from Kisumu Central (21), Muhoroni (7) and Kisumu East (4). In Kakamega, the 32 cases are from Likuyani (12), Malaya (7), Mumias West (4), Mumias East (3), Lurambi and Navakholo (2) cases each, Butere and Shinyalu (1) case each.

In Trans Nzoia, the 26 cases are from Kiminini (11), Saboti (9), Kwanza (4) and Cherangany (2). In Kilifi, the 24 cases are from Malindi (23) and Magarini (1). In Nyandarua, the 23 cases are from Kinangop (20) and OIKalou (3).

In Kericho, the 23 cases are from Ainamoi (14), Belgut and Buret (4) cases each, Kipkelion (1). In Uasin Gishu, the 23 cases are from Ainabkoi (14), Kapseret (4), Moiben (3) and Turbo (2).

In Nyamira, the 21 cases are from Nyamira North (14), Borabu (4), Masaba North (2) and Nyamira Town (1). In Machakos, the 20 cases are from Machakos Town (10), Athi River (8) and Kangundo (2).

In Migori, the 16 cases are from Awendo (9), Rongo (5) and Uriri (2). In Nyeri, the 15 cases are from Mathira East and Nyeri Central (6) cases each, Mukurweini (3).

In Murang’a, the 14 cases are from Mathioya (8), Kiharu (4) and Gatanga (2). In Turkana, all the 13 cases are from Turkana West. In Siaya, the 10 cases are from Alego Usonga and Rarieda (4) cases each, Gem (2).

In Mandera, the 9 cases are from Mandera East (7), Lafey and Mandera North (1) case each. In Busia, the 8 cases are from Teso North (6) abd Matayos (2).

In Meru, the 7 cases are from Imenti North (4), Imenti Central (2) and Imenti South (1), while in Kisii, all the 7 cases are from Kitutu Chache South.

All the 6 cases in West Pokot, are from West Pokot, the 6 cases in Tharaka Nithi, are from Chuka and Tharaka North (3) cases each, the 6 cases in Makueni, are from Makueni (4) and Kibwezi West (2), and the 6 cases in Homabay, are from Hombay Town (5) and Ndhiwa (1).

In Elgeyo Marakwet, the 5 cases are from Keiyo North (4) and Marakwet East (1). In Embu, the 4 cases are from Manyatta (3) and Mbeere South (1). In Nandi, the 3 cases are from Emgwen (2) and Chesumei (1).

All the 2 cases in Kirinyaga, are Kirinyaga Central, the 2 cases in Bomet, are from Bomet Central and Konoin with (1) case each, the 2 cases in Bungoma, are from Bumula and Webuye East (1) case each.

The case in Samburu, is from Samburu Central, the case in Baringo, is from Baringo Central, the case in Wajir, is from Wajir East, the case in Kwale, is from Msambweni, and the case in Taita Taveta is from Taveta.
