Court declines to stop vetting of Sonkos deputy nominee Anne Kananu Mwenda

The High Court has declined to issues orders barring the Nairobi County Assembly from vetting Anne Kananu Mwenda who was nominated as Deputy Governor by suspended Governor Mike Sonko.

In the case, Peter Adhiambo Agoro moved to court to temporarily bar Ms. Mwenda’s vetting and also order Sonko not to nominate any other person pending the hearing and determination of his fraud case.

The court directed that the inter party hearing on the matter take place on February 17.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi has forwarded Ms. Mwenda’s name to the Committee of Appointments for consideration.

At the same time, the Nairobi County Assembly on Wednesday held a second special sitting in less than a month to discuss the deputy governor nominee’s fate

Sonko nominated Anne Kananu Mwenda, the county’s Disaster Management and Coordination Sector Chief Officer, to the position of Deputy Governor on January 6.

In a letter to Speaker Beatrice Elachi, Sonko said the decision was in the interest of ensuring stability in the country’s capital after he was barred from accessing his office.

“…the complexity in Nairobi became more intricate following my arraignment in court December 2019, and the subsequent bail terms that, among other things, require me, as Governor, to stay out of office until the determination of the matter,” read the letter.
