Chief Justice Martha Koome pledges to ensure access to justice for all

Chief Justice Martha Koome says she is committed to ensure that social justice cascades down to the common citizen.

Speaking on Thursday during a meeting with the The Youth Congress, a premier youth serving organization in Kenya, Justice Koome reiterated that access to justice is a basic principle of the rule of law, pledging to ensure its availed to all.

“Access to justice is a human right in itself and, together with the rule of law, offers a concrete pathway to peace, good governance, human rights, democracy, and sustainable development” she said.

During the meeeting, the Youth Congress launched a campaign to highlight the importance of equal access to justice for all.

Raphael Obonyo, Convener of The Youth Congress, noted that: “In the absence of access to justice, people are unable to have their voice heard, exercise their rights, challenge discrimination or hold decision-makers accountable.”

“Effective judicial system is important in addressing some of the socio-economic and political problems facing young people in Kenya. Also, a functioning judiciary is essential for development and nurturing of Kenya’s nascent democracy,” he added.
