Two Ugandans arrested transporting 432,000 plastic bags to Kenya

Police in Busia are holding two bus operators working for a Uganda-based company for allegedly transporting plastic bags into Kenya contrary to the law.

According to Busia County National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) boss, Moses Ombogo, the driver and his conductor were ferrying the bags from Kampala, Uganda to their alleged owners in Nakuru, Kenya, when they were intercepted by NEMA officials.

The two were reportedly transporting 36 bales of plastic bags, all amounting to 432, 000 pieces.

“The price of the plastic bags, in total, is about Ksh.600,000. We have taken them to Busia Police Station where we also recorded a statement. The two will be arraigned in court tomorrow (Thursday, April 12),” said Ombogo.

Ombogo further stated that investigations were underway to establish exactly how the two managed to pass through the Kenya-Busia border despite the set regulations concerning the manufacture, sale and distribution of plastic bags in the country.

He further warned that those found with plastic bags would face the full force of the law.
