Brace yourself! Cold weather to persist till August
The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to brace themselves for extreme cold weather with temperatures expected to drop to below 18degrees.
Heavy rainfall that characterised most of March, April and May has come to an end and paved way for an unusually cold season from June to August, a statement from the weatherman said.
“Cases of respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and the common flu are expected to be on the upsurge in areas such as Nairobi, Central Highlands and part of the highlands west of Rift Valley such as Kericho and Eldoret,” the Met Department said.
The general public especially the elderly and children are advised to keep warm to avoid repeatedly contracting such diseases, the statement adds.
Foggy conditions in areas such as Nyeri and Limuru have posed a challenge to motorists.
“Motorists and pedestrians along the Nairobi-Naivasha road, especially along the Kinungi stretch, should take utmost care to minimize accidents that may result from such weather conditions,” the weatherman warned.
Those on air travel have also been advised that flights to and from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) may also be disrupted.
“Thick fog associated with the cold weather will be a hindrance to clear visibility leading to diversion of aircrafts to other airports,” said the weatherman.
Kenyans have also been warned to avoid lighting jikos (stoves) in poorly ventilated houses to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can lead to death.
