BBI report finally handed over to Uhuru and Raila in Kisii
The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report has finally been handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
The Yusuf Haji-led team handed over the document at Kisii State Lodge on Wednesday morning.
“Leo ni leo! This is the day that many people have been waiting for. Yesterday (Tuesday) I hesitated to say that we are going to receive the report today (Wednesday) but finally nyoka imetoka. We now have a report that people can talk about,” Mr. Odinga said.
In an apparent reference to DP William Ruto and his allies, the ODM leader said ‘some people’ had been speculating about the contents of the BBI report and even opposing it yet they had not read it.
According to Mr. Odinga, following lengthy deliberations between himself and President Kenyatta, they identified problems that have been ailing the country.
“We decided that we should take steps towards solving these problems not just for ourselves but with interests of this generation and the next. We asked ourselves why we have a new constitution…that time it was 8 years old…yet there are still problems… so there must be other issues that are making us not enjoy what the founding fathers of our nation wanted. Somehow we don’t have plenty within our borders 56 years after we got independence,” he added.
According to him, Kenyans are ‘angry because they are hungry’ which is why he and President Kenyatta identified 9 issues plaguing the country and tasked the BBI team with the responsibility of trying to find solutions.
He reiterated that the task force came up with the report after traversing the country and talking to Kenyans after which it was decided that the team be reappointed to validate the document.
“We came up with the concept of regional consultation. Luos, Kisiis and Kurias came here with 500 delegates and the rest had 300. Some were elders, women and youth while some were politicians, religious leaders, businessmen….and after lengthy deliberations, the report was presented by experts and they retreated to the (Gusii) stadium where we were yesterday (Tuesday) to launch the BBI and that is where the reggae started,” he added.
Mr. Odinga emphasized that it is because of this reason that he and the President deliberately decided to have the report handed over to them in Kisii.
