Bandits torch over 30 houses in Baringo

Tension is high in Korkoron and Lamaiywe villages in Marigat Sub County, Baringo County following fresh attacks on Tuesday, February 8 night that saw over 30 houses razed down.

According to sources, suspected armed bandits from the neighbouring Pokot County struck the villages in the night, gunshots rendered the air for four hours as the bandits engaged locals and security teams in a heated exchange of fire.

The armed raiders, who are reported to have been in hundreds, held the village hostage chanting war songs before burning the houses forcing people to flee to safety and seek refuge in the neighbouring counties.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on phone, Paul Kipyemat, a resident said that learning in Chebinyiny, Chemorongion, Lamaiywe and Kapindasum schools has since been paralyzed.

Kipyemat further added that the inferno caused massive destruction of property.

Baringo County Commissioner, Peter Okwanyo, convened a security meeting Wednesday morning with  top security officers in the county to address the incident.
