‘Babu shoots the messenger,’ NTV responds to lawsuit threat

NTV Kenya has responded to Embakasi East MP Babu Owino a day after he threatened to move to court to sue the station for defamation.

The TV station in a follow-up story after it emerged that the MP was planning to move to court, the station in a hilarious pun said the MP has choosen to “shoot the messenger”.

“Babu shoots the messenger,” the station captioned the story.

Through his lawyers, Okatch and Partners Advocates, Babu had asked the media for a public apology within two days.

He wanted the Tv station to admit liability for ‘slanderous and libelous statements’ failure to which he would move to court.

Further, the MP claimed that the feature story had painted him in negative light, opening him up to public criticism.

“That your story on the plight of Orinda though noble as it shows his improved state, has been used by yourselves to attack, accuse, persecute, reprimand, convict our client in the eyes of the public. The sole intention was indeed to whip up emotions, and incite the public against our client, ” the letter dated July 1 read.

Owino, whose real name is Paul Ongili, is said to have drawn his gun and allegedly shot DJ Evolve, who was reportedly unarmed.

The incident is said to have occurred at the popular B Club in Kilimani estate, Nairobi.

Police say the lawmaker argued with the DJ, before he drew his gun and shot him on the neck.

Questions abound as to why the MP was allowed into the club with a firearm.

The MP later released a statement claiming that he was provoked.
