At least 42 people killed in Cameroon landslide after heavy rains

Over 40 people are said to have died in the Cameroon landslide on Tuesday.

Reports from the Cameroon Radio Television said the incident occurred at around 9pm in Bafoussam.

“Around 10 p.m. I heard a noise,” Albert Kenge, who survived the landslide, told Africa News.

“I saw a big cloud of dust and when it dissipated, I saw that the mountain had collapsed,” he added.

There are reportedly 120 people who live in the area and VOA said more than 30 people are still missing.

At least 70 people reportedly sustained injuries in the landslide with six in critical condition.

20 houses are said to have been destroyed in the Cameroon landslide.

“Nzonkewe Tanyi, 61, says he is still in search of three of his children and uncle,” VOA said adding that soldiers have been deployed to help with rescue efforts even as heavy rains continued to pose a challenge.

President Paul Biya said on Tuesday sent his condolences to the families of the victims as his Minister of Decentralization and Local Development Georges Elanga went to visit the scene.

The Minister said 25,000,000 francs (Ksh.4,377,922) would be released to support the victims.
