Aga Khan medical centre on Thika Road among 811 clinics to be shut down

An Aga Khan medical centre located on Thika Road has been listed among 811 clinics that will be shut down.

The Health Ministry released a circular citing AKUH medical and dialysis centre at Jewel Complex in Roysambu as one of the health facilities in the country that will be closed.

“The attached list of facilities did not meet the minimum standards for licensure and were therefore ordered to be closed until such a time that they comply with the minimum standards and apply to the relevant regulatory bodies for re-inspection,” the document reads.

“This was based on the services offered, the health infrastructure and the health personnel minimum standards as per the legal notice,” it adds.

The AKUH medical and dialysis centre at Jewel Complex is only seven months old and was to serve as a medical and dialysis centre.

Mr Shawn Bolouki, the hospital Chief Executive Officer said it was the first outpatient centre that offers renal dialysis.

The Health Ministry circular said 107 health centers in Nairobi face closure following a joint inspection with regulatory bodies in accordance with Sections 25(1) of the Health Act.

They include Mariakani Cottage Hospital in Utawala, Airport Medical Services, Alliance Hospital, Shalom Medical Centre Centre, Family Hospital among others.

In March, Shalom Hospital in Machakos Town was shut down following the death of a 7-month-old baby after an injection was administered to him.

Two months later, Seaside Hospital in Mombasa was also closed over poor standards and staff found to be operating with expired licenses.
