Aga Khan Hospital to pay Ksh.3M for negligence

A Kisumu court has ordered the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu to pay a woman Ksh.3million in damages for negligence.

Antonina Akinyi had sued the hospital after a botched operation on her body in 2015 after she was admitted with abdominal pain.

In court records, Akinyi says after the operation, she developed complications in her abdomen.

She again underwent another operation but now at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi where she found out that a surgical tool had accidentally been left inside her.

However, Aga Khan Hospital denied the claims saying the procedure was correctly done.

In the case, Akinyi sued the surgeon who operated on her as well as the hospital.

She had also lodged a complaint with the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board which directed the hospital to compensate her but in vain..

In his ruling on Thursday, CM Julius Ng’arnga’r said that the hospital was guilty and ordered payment of Ksh.3million to Akinyi.

Several other hospitals in the country have recently been put on the spot for alleged sloppiness and lack of care.

In Bungoma, a woman had to undergo a second surgery after it was discovered that the medical team at the referral hospital left a needle in her private parts.

According to the victim’s mother, the Bungoma Referral Hospital management had initially told her they could not perform the procedure immediately as they did not have the required equipment.

In the same county, another woman was rewarded Ksh.2.5million as compensation for being beaten by nurses at the district hospital.

The woman had been left to give birth on the floor after being verbally and physically assaulted.

In Nairobi, Mbagathi Hospital was ordered to shut down its maternity wing after a fire incident that also revealed that the management ignored earlier warnings on the same.
