80 more people have tested positive for coronavirus in Kenya bringing the total to 1,109.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said 77 of them are Kenyans while 3 are Somali nationals.

“In terms of age, the cases range from 6 months to 66 years while in terms of gender there are 53 males and 27 females,” he said.

The CS said the ministry has increased testing capacity and the 80 new cases are from 3,102 samples that were tested in the last 24 hours.

He added that cumulative samples tested stand at 52, 507.

Distribution of the new cases by county is as follows: Nairobi (41), Mombasa (20), Siaya (7), Kwale (6), Garissa (3), Kajiado (2) and Taita Taveta (1).

The CS revealed that the seven cases from Siaya County are all from Ugenya: contacts were all traced back to a mourner who travelled from Kibera in Nairobi to Ugenya for a burial.

“Someone signed the document that allowed this mourner to travel. It was inspected by police all the way from Kibera to Siaya,” the CS lamented.

The Nairobi cases are from Kibera (13), Westlands (9), Langata (5), Ruaraka (3), Embakasi West (2), Embakasi East (2), Kasarani (2), Starehe (2), Dagoretti North (2) and Dagoretti North (1).

In Mombasa, Mvita has 6; Jomvu 5, Likoni 4, Changamwe 3 and Kisauni 2.

9 people have since been discharged bringing the total number of recoveries to 375.

Fatalities still stand at 50 as there have been no deaths in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 40 other individuals who were tested at border points (Namanga, Lunga Lunga, Taveta and Isebania) were confirmed to be positive and have been referred back to Tanzania.

39 are Tanzanians and 1 is a Burundian national.

CS Kagwe said border points have become hot spots for the COVID-19 disease and those living in the said areas should remain vigilant.

Aside from truck drivers, Government officers working at border points will now be required to take COVID-19 tests.
