76-year-old man who cycled 223km to Mois Kabarak home turned away

Deep adoration for the late Mzee Daniel arap Moi saw 76-year-old Nathan Ambuti cycle from Kakamega to Kabarak ahead of the final send-off.

Dressed in a vintage KANU-flag tie and pinstripe suit, Ambuti embarked on the journey that took four days.

“I would not wish to miss the funeral of the man who was an icon of peace not only in Kenya but across Africa,” he told Citizen Digital.

Ambuti had left his home on his pimped-out bicycle adorned with national flags from different countries.

On the bicycle were different messages inscribed in white ink.

He told Citizen Digital that since he did not have any money for a hotel room, he would sleep on verandahs and then resume his sojourn at the crack of dawn.

Ambuti, who hails from Butere, is a self-made peace ambassador for Kenya and was hoping to be part of the thousands who would visit the late Moi’s Kabarak home.

Despite cycling an approximated 223 kilometers and taking breaks in between to rest his weary muscles, Ambuti was sent away upon reaching the gate on Tuesday morning.

According to Ambuti, ‘tough’ security officers told him to return on Wednesday when the burial for the late Mzee Moi will be held.
