43 terror suspects arrested in Eastleigh detained for two days

Forty three terror suspects arrested in Eastleigh were on Wednesday arraigned before a Nairobi court and detained for two days pending investigations.

The suspects including 38 students from Alison and Atlas Colleges on 1st Avenue, Eastleigh were arrested on Tuesday.

Also arrested were the Directors of the said colleges and three managers of Atlas College who are being investigated for the offence of offering training without registration.

At least 15 of the suspects are accused of being in the country illegally and without any documents to ascertain their nationality.

The Prosecution initially sought five days to allow detectives from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) conclude investigations.

The court was told that investigators are to obtain the suspects’ call data, further that the investigations are complex and require more time and involve a number of agencies that will need time to interview and re-interview the suspects.

The defense however opposed the prosecution’s plea: “There’s no terrorism charges that have been mentioned by the investigating officer. They are not linked to any terrorism groups so we are opposing the application to have the accused detained for 5 days.”
