27 people arrested for failing to wear face masks in Kakamega

At least 27 people were arrested on Monday in Mumias West, Kakamega County for allegedly failing to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols set out by the Ministry of Health.

The suspects were arrested in a crackdown led by Mumias West Deputy County Commissioner Charles Wambugu and area Police Commander Paul Mengich.

According to the deputy county commissioner, a majority of those who were arrested were found moving around without face masks.

“We have cracked the whip and we have arrested about 27 residents of this town for not wearing masks. Some are pedestrians, others were in PSV vehicles restaurants while others were going about their own businesses,” said Mr. Mengich.

He vowed that the operation would continue to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease in the area.

Area residents have however faulted police for failing to lead  by example, noting that security officers are themselves not adhering to the safety protocols.
