11M Kenyans registered for Huduma Namba, Uhuru says

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday revealed that 11 million people have already registered for their Huduma Namba in just 16 days of the process.

In his Easter message to Kenyans, President Kenyatta insisted that the process will move the country from what he termed as a manual, scattered and cumbersome data management regime to an organized digital service delivery platform.

While urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and ensure that our families and neighbours are safe, President Kenyatta was keen to note that the Huduma Namba registration centers will remain open during Easter break to give those he said might have been too held up, a chance to register.

Kenyans living in the Diaspora will also take part in registering their Huduma Namba beginning May 6, 2019 for a period of 45 days at their respective Embassies and Consulates.

The CS said that the project is not a sole government initiative but rather one that Kenyans should adapt to ensure the betterment of service delivery.

The roll out of the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS), also known as Huduma Namba, had been challenged in court but the government was allowed to continue with the registration on condition that it should not be mandatory.

A three-judge bench – comprising Justices Weldon Korir, Pauline Nyamweya and Mumbi Ngugi – on April 1, 2019, also barred the government from collecting DNA data and GPS coordinates as well as sharing the NIIMS information with any foreign organization.

The NIIMS project seeks to identify all Kenyan residents and registered foreigners through a unique primary identifier using biometric (fingerprints and facials only), demographic and physical details in an exercise that also aims at enhancing national security.
