President Museveni praises Ugandan siblings for winning East Africa’s Got Talent
Ugandan siblings Esther and Ezekiel Mutesasira have been crowned winners of the first edition of East Africa’s Got Talent (EAGT) following weeks of competition that drew participation from four regional countries.
EAGT is part of the larger Got Talent franchise owned by English entertainment mogul Simon Cowel, with Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania and hosts Kenya as the participating countries.
The Sunday night finale that had six contestants by virtue of public voting saw the singing duo win the coveted $50,000 (Ksh. 5 Million) prize money.
Taking to the stage both dressed in blue outfits, the pair belted out a soulful rendition of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s smash hit ‘When you believe,’ to a rapturous applause from the audience as well as visible excitement from the judges.
The Mutesasira siblings beat out Rwanda’s Intayoberana Cultural Dance Group that came in second place. Other finalists were Comedic Dance Group (Uganda), Dance Alliance Network (Uganda), Jehovah Shalom Acapella (Uganda), Janella Tamara and Spellcast (Kenya).
Esther and Ezekiel’s first performance in the competition was aired on August 11, 2019 where they brought the house down; first performing together before each singing solo.
The duo began that performance with their rendition of ‘Hallelujah’ before Judge Gaetano Kagwa stopped them midway and asked each of them to sing independently; presumably to evaluate their solo vocal strengths.
They each gave solo fiery performances, and moved the judges by displaying they were each other’s fan, thereby sailing through with four ‘Yes’ votes.
Esther and Ezekiel, aged 14 and 11 years respectively, performed a rendition of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s ‘when you believe’ at Sunday’s finale.
Wikipedia reportedly said concerns were raised about the Burundian drummers about not coming from the four participating countries namely Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his political nemesis Bobi Wine are among those that have since congratulated the siblings for winning the much-hyped competition.
My grandchildren have told me about our talented bazukulu Esther and Ezekiel, who have won an East African Talent competition this evening. I am told they are very good singers. I congratulate them. pic.twitter.com/uIXBDdt9Xt
