Memes about leaving your father's home by age 25 light up Kenyan Twitter
In
most average African homes, it's common for 18-year olds to get hauled out of
their fathers' houses as their parents force them to face the world, be 'men'
and learn to fend for themselves.
In
fact, men (and women) who still live with their parents years after they
clocked twenty years and above are normally frowned upon, derided and roundly
chided by society.
Leaving
your father's house after 18 seems to be an accomplishment and many post-teens
cannot wait to become adults and disentangle themselves from the shackles of
their parents' dictates.
However,
a lot of factors may deter a fresh adult from leaving their parents’ home
immediately - joblessness, harsh economic times, steep housing costs, illness,
school, etc.
But
with all that still in consideration, nothing beats the pride and honor that
comes with being able to live as far away as possible from your parents. And,
obviously, being able to fend for yourself, pay your bills and independently afford
that roof over your head.
One
Twitter user @its_fanuel decided to stir the waters when he tweeted, "But
at 25 haufai kuwa kwa nyumba ya babako."
The
tweet, which now has been viewed close to 20 million times, brags of a
staggering 6,000+ likes and over 3,000 quote tweets.
It
took Kenya and East Africa by storm as tens of thousands of people reacted to
the controversial tweet, many digging up old memes to create the perfect
Twitter laugh fest.
Thousands
of people flocked to the quote tweet section to imagine themselves as 20, 30,
and 40-year olds, still living with their parents and shamelessly engaging in
all manner of silly household shenanigans with their parents.
The
impact of these tweets can only be felt visually (and audibly) and therefore,
we shall embed some of the most viral replies and leave you laughing yourself
dry, gasping for air.
