Abdulrazzaq Hussein is third winner of Unsung hero campaign

The Wangari Maathai Foundation has announced the third winner of the Unsung hero campaign as Abdulrazzaq Hussein.

The 27-year-old young change-maker is the founder of Global Youth Projects.

“Abdulrazzaq Hussein has shown compassion, and courage in his consistent commitment to helping his community during this time of crisis,” a statement from the foundation reads.

In May, the Wangari Maathai Foundation launched the Unsung hero campaign which runs until September 2020.

The campaign identifies young people helping their community at this unpredictable time through acts of courage and resilience.

Following the closure of schools by the government to combat the spread of COVID-19, children from remote areas have been greatly affected as they cannot access online learning materials.

Research done by UNICEF shows that over 18 million students have been affected by the closure of schools.

Abdulrazzaq Hussein and his team partnered with Mvita MP Shariff Nassir to distribute revision materials to candidates who cannot access online revision materials in Mombasa and Kilifi counties.

Their efforts have since impacted over 2000 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and secondary education candidates in Mombasa and Kilifi.

Abdulrazzaq Hussein has also been providing relief food packs to widows, orphans, and vulnerable youth in Mombasa while providing Covid19 community sensitization alongside Mutual Aid Kenya.

He is also offering online training for youth on mastering the art of self-leadership, character development, mental illness, and resilience through counseling. This is helping keep young people productive during this time.

The Foundation will create a cohort of the Unsung Hero winners and support them by bringing awareness and advocacy to their issues, through knowledge, networks and mentorship.

The Wangari Maathai Foundation continues to inspire young people to be leaders of courage and character by embodying the works of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai.
