Hair stylist creates portraits on hair; see what he does with salt
Roberto Ferrel, a San Antonio, Texas barber has made international headlines a time and time again with his unique designs and life-like portraits of celebrities, athletes and family members in customers’ hair which he shares on social media.
Roberto Ferrel, known as ‘Rob the Original’, has done many portraits, including Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, artists such as Bob Marley, Tupac, NWA, Justin Beiber, Adele, The Weekend, Snoop Dogg and Drake.
He has even done portraits of movie stars including fast and furious Ludacris and Vin Diesel, Empire, San Antonio Spurs favorites, athletes including Lebron James, and even superheroes like Spiderman.
According to MySanAntonio news outlet, Ferrel says that he thrives in uniqueness.
“I wanted to stand out and do something different,” said Ferrel.
The art came before the barbering for Ferrel.
He sees art in everything: hair, food and even salt and everyday he continues to explode different mediums of art.
While you are writing ‘wash me’ on the dirty cars you spot, Ferrel is busy drawing his next portrait, which he calls ‘dust art’.
Ferrel first cut his own hair when he was just 10 years old.
“I started cutting my own hair about 10 years ago to save money,” he said.
Family members and friends began asking him for haircuts and eventually he began charging them.
The hairstyle depictions usually take about two hours to complete and Ferrel uses one hand to hold a digital photo on a phone or iPad while the other hand styles the design, carving an outline with a trimmer and then shaving it with a razor.
The designs include color, which he creates with eye and lip liner. “The hair designs last about two weeks,” he said.
Basic haircuts start at USD20 (Ksh 2,000) and more intricate styles and portraits range between USD150 (Ksh 15, 000) and USD200 (Ksh 20,000).
He opened his first shop, Rob the Original Barbershop (or ROBS) and now owns two of them.
