Soko maize flour cleared of aflatoxin, Kiambu County Govt says

The Kiambu County Health department has allayed fears of aflatoxin in Soko maize flour.

A statement from the Chief Officer of Health Services Dr Kamundia Ndung’u said 43 samples were submitted to the National Public Health Laboratories on November 18.

”The analysis results were received on November 22 and all the sampled batch number for Soko, Amaize as well as the dry maize were found to be in compliance with food standards as stipulated in the Food, Drugs and chemical substances act CAP 254 L.O.K,” Dr. Ndung’u said.

The County officer further averred that random checks of food products are within its mandate and all public health officials are extra vigilant on suspected cases of aflatoxin.

The manufacturers of Soko maize meal, Capwell Industries Limited, welcomed the results and assured county officials as well as customers that they prioritise food safety and health matters.

Mr. Mahesh Chavda said: “We continue to monitor and control food safety parameters at each stage right from the sourcing of raw materials, transportation, storage, milling, packing and dispatch. We also closely work with our distributors, wholesalers and supermarkets to ensure that our products are properly stored in their premises to ensure product safety until it is bought by the consumer.”

He added that Capwell Industries is HACCP Certified and adheres to the national KEBS and global food production standards.
