Safaricom network upgrade to affect top up, data services

Telecom operator Safaricom is set to conduct a second system upgrade of its network in under a month.

The move is part of Safaricom’s efforts to improve the quality of its network to its over 29 million customers.

The maintenance to be conducted from Saturday noon to Sunday 3 am will have little impact to customers with only a handful of services interrupted during the period.

According to Safaricom, the scheduled maintenance will affect data bundle purchases, Okoa Jahazi product purchases as well as SIM swaps.

Also affected will be outgoing international calls and SMS, all top up services as well as roaming services.

All USSD services will also be disrupted during the period.

Safaricom strategy director Joseph Ogutu said voice, M-Pesa and data services will not be affected by the planned maintenance.

“While the timing has been planned to result in the least disruption, we are sorry for any inconvenience that may be experienced,” Mr Ogutu said.

Despite having the largest network, Safricom has been on the spot over its network quality in some regions failing to reach the Communications Authority minimum network coverage target of 87.5 per cent in at least eight of the ten regions analyzed.

This means that chances for a subscriber to experience stable network signal strength from the base transmission station are lower compared to other operators.

The system maintenance and upgrade is expected to boost the quality of service and improve customer experience.
