Ex-Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph appointed as interim boss

The board of Safaricom has appointed former CEO Michael Joseph as the interim boss following the death of its CEO Bob Collymore on July 1, 2019.

The appointment comes after a special board meeting that was called on Monday afternoon by Chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a.

“Mr. Joseph will hold this position until the board communicates in due course, on a permanent appointment,” read the statement in part.

Michael Joseph returns to the hot seat at Safaricom 9 years after his departure in November 2010.

The 67 year old served as Safaricom C.E.O between July 2000 and 2010 when the firm was at the time re-launched as a joint venture between Vodafone UK and Telkom Kenya.

During his tenure, he steered the company from a subscriber base of less than 20,000 to over 16.71 million subscribers.

Michael Joseph will be no new stranger at Safaricom having held a Non-Executive Director role at the telco to this point having been installed to the board in September of 2008.

Joseph brings along an extensive international experience in company start-ups, the implementation and operation of large wireless and wire-line networks having previously worked on large telco undertakings including Hungary, Australia and the USA.

Michael Joseph has served on other boards with his most recent appointment seeing him fill the Chairman seat at Kenya Airways in 2016.
