Kibos sugar factory shut down

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has shut down two plants at Kibos Sugar Company in Kisumu over alleged pollution.

This follows complaints by members of the public that the miller has been discharging factory waste to River Kibos which flows into Lake Victoria.

The locals said the discharged were harmful to their livelihoods as they used the river water for domestic use and as a livestock watering hole.

Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko while on a visit to the county last week warned of actions against the miller if it is found culpable of polluting the river.
