Kenya Power signs power purchase deals for 160MW

Kenya Power has signed power purchase agreements with three independent power producers in a move to boost the country’s electricity output.

The deal will see an additional 160 megawatts of electricity come to the national grid mostly from renewable sources of energy.

The first agreement was signed with Malindi Solar Group for 40 megawatts while Selenkei Investments will add a further 40 megawatts.

A third deal was signed with Cedate Limited for 40 megawatts of solar energy.

It was not immediately clear which fourth company would be supplying the final 40 megawatts of electricity.

Solar energy is considered a cheap source of electricity.

Kenya Power acting managing director Ken Tarus said the deal will be a major boost even as the utility firm moves to connect more homes to the national grid.

By the end of last week, a total of 6 million homes had been connected to the grid.
