Govt orders employers to identify all employees before July 8

All employers in Kenya are expected to submit lists of employees failure to which they will be liable to fines of up to Ksh.100,000 or six-month jail terms.

The National Employment Authority has given companies up to July 8, 2019 in a move intended to identify vacancies and help place potential job seekers.

A notice in the local dailies cited Section 76-81 of the Employment Act 2007 where employers will be required to go to the NEA website and fill out details.

They include:

1. employer’s name and full address; 
2. details of the vacant post;
3. minimum qualification required of the person seeking to be employed;
4. place of work;
5. type of work (casual, permanent or term contract)
6. such other information as the director may require.

According to a survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 7 million Kenyans are unemployed.

Out of these, 1.4 million have been desperately looking for work while the rest have given up on job hunting, with some opting to go back for further studies.

The survey paints a grim picture of the country’s unemployment levels, while shattering the 40 percent unemployment rate myth.

A spot check on the NEA website says it falls under the docket of CS Ukur Yattani in the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection.

“It mainly provides for a comprehensive institutional framework for: employment management; enhancement of employment promotion interventions; and increasing access to employment by the youth, minorities and marginalized groups and for connected purposes.”
