Forex,Fuel Charges Up in July Power bills

The forex charge in July power bills have risen to Sh4.52 per unit of electric power as consumers also bear high fuel prices with the levy up by Sh3.67, for every unit consumed, sector regulator Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) says.

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) in the official Kenya gazette shows fuel levy – which is influenced by the share of electricity from diesel generators.

Weakening of the Kenya shilling coupled with escalating prices of fuel have combined to pile pressure on electricity prices through the monthly adjusted fuel surcharge levy as well as the forex adjustment charges.

At Sh3.67, homes and business will pay an additional Sh900 million in fuel costs charges based on the average monthly consumption.

The new charges take effect today Friday for pre-paid consumers with postpaid users set to feel the pain later this month.

The government has promised cheaper electricity from increased use of wind and solar energy – by reducing costly thermal power and ultimately cutting the fuel cost adjustment levy in bills.
