Common fashion mistakes Kenyan men make
We can all agree that most men do not have the best eye for fashion and styling is just not a guy’s strength.
Between providing for your family, keeping track of your favourite sports team, and being the best employee for your company there’s little or no time left to read a man’s lifestyle magazine to see what’s in style.
Some common fashion mistakes men make include:
WEARING ILL-FITTING CLOTHES
You are not fooling anyone by wearing oversized clothes to hide that beer belly.
And don’t get me started on wearing clothes that are too tight/small for you. If your pants touch the floor or cover your shoelaces when you wear them, they are too long.
If your sleeves are drooping over your shoulder, give them to a relative as a souvenir. Wrong fitting clothes are not a good look on a man.
RECYCLING A PAIR OF JEANS FOR TOO LONG
Once in a while, you’re allowed to wear a pair of jeans more than once without washing but don’t overdo it.
Women can get away with this because they are mindful of their cleanliness, but if you spend the whole day with your mechanic at the garage, there’s a high chance that your jeans will get dirty.
If the hemlines and pockets look dirty at first glance, then the jeans definitely need a wash.
WEARING SOCKS WITH SANDALS
Ideally, sandals (whether for men or women) were designed for ventilation purposes i.e. to wear when you need to air your feet.
Wearing socks with sandals defeats this whole purpose and makes you look tacky.
WEARING SHORT SLEEVED SHIRTS WITH A TIE TO THE OFFICE
This is debatable because ideally, short sleeved shirts are classified as casual shirts but we see a lot of this in our “uniformed” offices such as restaurants, airlines etc. If you want to look like a school boy in the office then go for it. I’ll leave it at that
WEARING BRANDED T-SHIRTS TO THE OFFICE
We understand that you have that one relative or friend who works for a multinational brand.
But just because you got some branded merchandize as freebies, it does not mean that you should rock these as fashion items.
If it is not your company branded on that T-shirt, save it for the quiet weekends when you’ll be lazing around the house or doing some landscaping in your compound.
WEARING WHITE SOCKS
White socks are for sports. Period!
WEARING SUITS WITH EXCESSIVE BUTTONS
It is a serious fashion crime to wear suits that have more than 3 buttons.
Excessive buttons on a suit makes the jacket look like a shirt hybrid. Remember this suit buttoning rule: always leave the bottom button unbuttoned.
SHOWING OFF YOUR HEAVAGE (MAN-CLEAVAGE)
Where do I even begin with this? We understand that your chest is probably your best asset but no one wants to see your man cleavage. Leave this to the women they are better at it.
WEARING TRACKSUITS IN PUBLIC
We have all encountered that one guy in the pub looking very lost wearing a tracksuit.
Reserve the tracksuits for the gym and any other athletic activity that you choose to engage in at your own free time.
OVERDOING THE DESIGNER LABELS
Nike at the top, Fubu at the bottom, a pair of Addidas shoes and a Gucci hat to top it all off; we get that you are a label lover but there’s a fine line between wearing designer labels and being a walking advertisement.
SHOWING US YOUR UNDERWEAR AKA SAGGING
You are probably in your teens or you are a teen at heart and sagging your pants is a sure show of swag.
But before you adopt this trend unknowingly, please understand that the sagging swag started with western prisoners as they were not allowed to wear belts in prison because of hanging themselves/each other.
Now, if you read more on the sagging culture, you’ll find out that in prison sagging signifies that you were “owned” by another prisoner or are available to be “owned”.
