KRA mounts search for Jubilee Party financier wanted over Ksh.2.2 billion taxes

  • According to KRA, Mary Wambui Mungai owes the tax authority approximately Ksh. 2.2 billion.
  • Mungai is wanted for failing to appear in court to answer for tax evasion in the period between 2014 and 2020

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has closed all airports and border points in an effort to corner a Jubilee Party financier wanted for tax evasion.

The financier, Mary Wambui Mungai, allegedly owes the tax authority approximately Ksh.2.2 billion, from government tenders. A report by the Daily Nation indicates that she landed tenders to supply the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the military.

Mungai is wanted for failing to appear in court for tax evasion in the period between 2014 and 2020. In June this year, she failed to answer summons by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alleging that she was away on a business trip in Zambia.

On December 3, she similarly failed to appear before the taxman sparking talks that she was planning to leave the country indefinitely.

According to her lawyer, Felix Kombo, his client has been unwell and in hospital since November 29. Her counsel however failed to provide medical documents to back his claim.
