Over 600 families have been displaced by floods in Kirinyaga County as heavy rains continue to pound various parts of the country.

According to Kenya Red Cross Coordinator in Kirinyaga County, Martin Kagunda the most affected families are those living in Mwea Constituency near River Thiba.

"We have helped affected families from Kithogondo village in Thiba Ward, Mwea and the affected families from Thiguku in Ndia Constituency where they benefited each from one kitchen set, two blankets, two mosquito nets, two bars of soap, one sleeping mat and one tarpaulin (temporary tent)," Kagunda said.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, several other families have been rendered homeless in other parts of Kirinyaga with their properties destroyed by flood waters in the region.

On Tuesday night, River Thiba burst its banks, cutting off Gakungu and Karira villagers with the rest from Ngurubani market.

"We are being forced to walk over five kilometres to Ngurubani market where we have been walking for five minutes," said Sicily Njagi.

Meanwhile, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allow has reiterated the gravity of the situation, urging residents of affected areas to relocate to safer areas and avoid venturing into risky spots.

Two people have since been reported dead in Kirinyaga following the floods.
