The
East Africa Philanthropy Network (EAPN) has unveiled the theme and vision for
the East Africa Philanthropy Awards (EAPA) 2024, emphasizing the transformative
power of media-driven storytelling in advancing philanthropy for marginalized
communities.
This
year’s awards, held under the theme ‘Revamping the East Africa Philanthropy Awards: Celebrating Innovation
and Impact in the Modern Era,’ aim to spotlight the role of media
in promoting impactful giving and addressing pressing environmental, social,
and governance issues.
A
new category, the Advocate for Giving Practice (Media Award), has been
introduced to celebrate journalists, media organizations, and advocates who
craft compelling narratives that inspire generosity and amplify social impact.
Media
campaigns showcasing grassroots initiatives, innovative youth-led projects, and
sustainable development efforts are expected to feature prominently in this
category.
“Storytelling
is more than just information-sharing; it is a call to action. Through media,
we connect people to the realities faced by marginalized groups and inspire
collective solutions,” an EAPN representative remarked.
The
2024 EAPA also highlights storytelling as a crucial tool in achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recognized
media projects are expected to demonstrate impact in areas such as renewable
energy, education, mental health awareness, and climate action, with a focus on
uplifting marginalized communities and fostering inclusivity.
Beyond
the media category, the awards will recognize excellence in other areas,
including the Digital
and Innovative Philanthropy Award, Sustainable
Impact Investment Award, and Youth Leadership in Philanthropy
Award.
These
categories underscore the importance of technology, ethical investments, and
youth engagement in driving transformative change across East Africa.
Since
its inception in 2012, the EAPA has celebrated changemakers such as Dr. Manu
Chandaria, Safaricom Foundation, and mental health advocate Sitawa Wafula.
This
year’s event aims to build on that legacy by addressing current societal
challenges, leveraging technological advancements, and promoting cross-sector
collaboration.
The
East Africa Philanthropy Awards 2024 seek to position themselves as a beacon of
innovation and excellence, recognizing the indispensable role of media in
championing a culture of giving and driving sustainable development across the
region and beyond.
