Four hospitalised after an attack by swarm of bees in Laikipia
It is reported that the ordeal unfolded around Tuesday, November 7 at 3:00 PM when the victims, ranging in age from 1 year to 79 years heard the buzzing of the bees, shortly after they were descended on.
Joram Kimani, a minor among the victims, recounted how he rushed to the aid of his younger sister and became a victim himself in the process.
"I was at home watching television when I heard screams from my grandmother's house. I rushed to investigate and discovered that it was bees. I immediately grabbed a blanket to shield some of the kids who were in the house," he said.
In a desperate attempt to shield himself from the relentless stinging, Kimani was compelled to dive into a nearby pool of water next to a well.
"I covered one of the kids with the blanket I had. However, the bees quickly surrounded and began attacking me. I fled and stumbled upon a pool of water, which was when they finally ceased their assault," he added.
"I then hurried to alert the villagers about the grandmother's dire situation, and they rushed to her rescue."
Among the victims, 79-year-old Martha Wanjiku described how she, together with her grandkids were relaxing inside their home when the bees descended upon them.
She narrated her frantic efforts to safeguard the young children within the house.
"I was spending time with my grandchildren when the bees suddenly invaded the space. As I rushed to protect the children and usher them outside, I realized that the bees had also swarmed outdoors. I had no choice but to bring the children back inside for their safety," she recalled.
"It was Kimani who came to their rescue, and after witnessing that, I made a dash to save my own life, unable to carry all four children at once."
Lucy Njoki detailed how she received distress calls from a concerned neighbor informing her that her sister and her grandchildren had fallen victim to a bee attack.
Together with other neighbors, they raced to the scene and managed to rescue the victims.
The victims initially received vital first aid at Ol-Morn Health Centre before being transferred to Nyahururu County & Referral Hospital for more comprehensive treatment.
Doctors have reassured that the victims are now out of immediate danger and are making good progress in their recovery from the injuries caused by the bee venom.
