Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has said political positions are ultimately bestowed by Kenyans, not party leaders, amid speculation over his future in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking during the burial of Eric Juma Wamboka, brother to Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, in Siboti Ward, Bumula Constituency, Bungoma County, Sifuna dismissed suggestions that losing party positions would mark the end of his political career, saying voters have the final say.

"Hao wananchi ndio wenye kupeana titles zote. Hata mimi kule ODM wanafikiria wakininyang'anya Katibu Mkuu, wakifikiria wakinitoa kama Naibu Kiranja wa Chama ama wale waliochache pale Senate, wanafikiria hamtanirudishia. Nyinyi ndio wenye kupeana. Sai ndio naskia mnasema mnataka kunipa kiti ingine. Mumeamua? Mimi nawaamini kwa sababu hiyo viti vyote ni nyinyi mnapeana," Sifuna said.

Sifuna maintained that his confidence lies with the electorate, insisting that any political office he holds is determined by the people rather than internal party decisions.

Addressing mourners, Sifuna also renewed the opposition's criticism of President William Ruto's administration, saying Kenyans must be united by their belief that the country needed political change.

"Tuko na sababu ya kwamba tunasema Ruto must go," he stated.

The Nairobi senator further accused the government of using excessive force against protesters, citing recent demonstrations in Nairobi during the second anniversary of Gen Z protests.

"Mimi ni Seneta wa Nairobi na wakati huu ni kilio mzima. Kule Mathare kuna wamama ambao watoto wao walichukuliwa wakati wa (Gen Z) protests. Wakati wanaandamana kuuliza watoto wao wako wapi, wakapigwa risasi," he claimed.

"Ruto is manufacturing victims faster than he can compensate them."

The burial ceremony was attended by several leaders, including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata and other political leaders.

The senator's remarks come days after the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) officially removed him as the party's Secretary-General, citing a report by the Internal Dispute Resolution Committee that recommended his ouster.
