Kenya's hospitality industry is counting on major infrastructure projects, including the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), sports facilities and conference infrastructure, to boost tourism and business travel in the coming years.

Speaking in Nairobi, Iconic Plaza Hotel, Food and Beverage Manager Philimon Liru said investments such as the Nairobi Expressway, Talanta Sports City Stadium and planned upgrades at JKIA have improved accessibility and enhanced Kenya's attractiveness as a tourism and meetings destination.

"The hospitality industry has really improved because projects like the Expressway have significantly reduced travel time between the airport and the city, making movement easier for visitors," he said.

Liru said preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with its East African neighbours, are expected to increase visitor arrivals and boost hotel occupancy rates.

He also welcomed the government's push to position Kenya as a meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) destination through investments such as the proposed Bomas International Convention Centre and the newly launched National Infrastructure Fund.

According to Liru, improved transport links and conference facilities will support tourism growth, create jobs and attract more international events to the country.

He, however, urged the government to prioritise completion of stalled projects such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to maximise returns on existing investments.

Liru was speaking as Iconic Plaza Hotel, formerly Grand Regency and later Laico Regency, prepares for its official relaunch in September.

The hotel, which reopened five months ago, currently operates more than 213 rooms, including two presidential suites, and has already hosted several high-profile events and international delegations.
