Candidates unable to access 2024 KCSE results as KNEC website collapses

Candidates of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination could not access their results after they were released on Thursday afternoon as the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website went down.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced the results some minutes past noon and said they could be publicly accessible afterwards.

Individual candidate results, the minister said, would be available on https://results.knec.ac.ke; Ogemba advised any candidates with trouble accessing them through the website to use the toll-free number 0800724900 or 0800721410.

However, immediately after the results were announced, Citizen Digital noted that the KNEC website was down.

“This page isn’t working”; “This site can’t be reached,” read the error messages displayed when one tried to click through the link.

The KNEC helpline Ogamba gave was also busy and Citizen Digital’s calls could not be connected.

At press time, the national examination body had not yet commented on the issue.

In a similar case in 2023, Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates were unable to access their results after the SMS service collapsed.

Those who requested their results got an SMS saying they were “not available” and advising them to “try again later after the announcement”, despite it being hours after the then-Education CS Ezekiel Machogu had finished announcing them.

KNEC later issued an apology saying their system was experiencing technical issues.
