African countries have been told to strengthen athlete development programmes, improve sports infrastructure and enhance regional cooperation as preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games gather momentum.

The call was made Thursday during the Continental Olympic Solidarity Forum in Nairobi, which has brought together National Olympic Committees (NOCs) from across Africa to discuss the pathway to LA28 and strategies for increasing the continent's medal success.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) President Shadrack Maluki said the gathering provides an opportunity for African nations to learn from one another and work collectively towards producing more podium finishes at future Olympic Games.

“We are addressing the LA28 pathway and how African countries can increase the number of athletes finishing on the podium. It is about learning from one another and working together as a continent,” he said.

Maluki noted that stronger competition within Africa, better athlete support systems and improved access to training equipment would be key to helping the continent compete more effectively against the world's leading sporting nations.

The forum also discussed Africa's long-term ambition to host the Olympic Games. Maluki said investment in sports infrastructure remains critical if the continent is to realise that goal.

“Infrastructure is key. As we develop sport technically, we must also develop the facilities required to host major international events,” he said.

On Kenya's preparations for LA28, Maluki said the country is targeting qualification in at least 10 sports, up from the six disciplines represented at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

He added that NOCK is working closely with sports federations and the government to support athletes through the qualification process.

Meanwhile, Olympic Solidarity Continental Manager for Africa Yassine Yousfi said the forum is designed to equip African NOCs with critical information required for preparations ahead of the Los Angeles Games.

He said discussions are focusing on key operational areas including accreditation, accommodation and other logistical requirements that countries need to address before LA28.

He acknowledged that countries are facing different challenges on the road to LA28 but identified visa access to the United States as one of the most frequently raised concerns among participating nations.

"Visa issues are a major concern for many countries, not only in Africa. However, we still have two years to go and we expect many of these challenges to be resolved before the Games," he said.

The forum comes as African Olympic committees intensify preparations for LA28, with a focus on increasing athlete participation, improving performances and positioning more African athletes for podium finishes at the Games.
